Dear Breakthrough Santa Fe Families and Community, 

The last month marked the beginning of the school year for all our students across Santa Fe. I always love the thrum of anticipation and excitement as students and colleagues reunite for the start of another year. And as we all settle into the old rhythms of the school year, this time also affords us the opportunity to extend a welcome to those new to our community. It is in this spirit that I write to you today to welcome back and introduce our two new staff members at Breakthrough Santa Fe. 

I say “welcome back” because for Yesenia “Yesi” Bermejo and Oscar Loya, Breakthrough had been home for years before they started in their professional roles this summer. In fact, many of you may have already known them as Breakthrough students and as Breakthrough summer teaching fellows before this year.

Of returning to Breakthrough, Yesi says that “I feel extremely honored to be welcomed back to such a unique and energizing community. Breakthrough initiated my joy of working with New Mexican youth and I seek to continue my own life-long learning through the Breakthrough Way.” Yesi graduated from Santa Fe High School and Breakthrough in 2015 and went on to study English Literature at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX as a Davis New Mexico Scholar. Yesi brings five years of experience as a summer Teaching Fellow for Breakthrough Santa Fe and was most recently a Communities in Schools Site Coordinator at Nina Otero Community School. She will be joining us as our Middle School Program Manager, where she will oversee many elements of the summer middle school program, student recruitment, Super Saturday’s, and middle school case management.

Oscar similarly feels “honored to be returning to the Breakthrough community! This is the place that taught me to be a life-long learner and to approach the world with care and curiosity.” A student at the Academy for Technology and the Classics in Santa Fe and the United World College in Montezuma, NM, Oscar graduated from Breakthrough in 2019 and is a recent graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, where he was a Davis New Mexico Scholar and studied anthropology. Oscar was also a summer Teaching Fellow in 2021 and joins our office as the Student Support Coordinator, managing our tutoring and mentoring programs and taking on 9th and 10th grade case management. 

Yesi and Oscar’s tenure with us marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for our organization: for the first time in our 19 years, we have Breakthrough Santa Fe alumni working at Breakthrough Santa Fe. I am thrilled to have two team members who so profoundly embody the Breakthrough spirit of life-long learning and who care so deeply about engaging whole families in ensuring student success. Most importantly, they bring a critical Santa Fe lens to the heart of our work, sharing powerful context that will lead to better outcomes for our students. 

We start the beginning of this year in a stronger position than ever. We are stewards of an impactful gift that will allow us to make college more affordable for our students: our 9th-graders will begin their high school journey with 529 College Savings Plans and our 12th-graders will graduate with the Breakthrough Gap Scholarship for in-state students. We welcomed 36 new seventh-grade students to our program and completed yet another successful summer, welcoming teaching fellows from far-flung regions of the United States and even here in our own backyard. And this year, about 90% of the Class of 2023 will be attending college, most of whom will be the first in their families to go to college. Through the academic enrichment and mentorship that we provide at Breakthrough, we hope to continue growing young leaders within our community who will create impact here in Santa Fe, as Yesi and Oscar have done. 

We are as grateful as ever for your partnership and for your trust in Breakthrough. We look forward to yet another great year and to sharing our successes with you soon. Thank you.

Estimadas familias y comunidad de Breakthrough Santa Fe, 

El último mes marcó el comienzo del año escolar para todos nuestros estudiantes en Santa Fe. Siempre me encanta el sentimiento de anticipación y entusiasmo cuando los estudiantes y colegas se reúnen para el comienzo de otro año. Y mientras que todos nos adaptamos a los viejos ritmos del año escolar, este tiempo también nos brinda la oportunidad de dar la bienvenida a los nuevos en nuestra comunidad. Es con este espíritu que les escribo hoy para darles la bienvenida y presentarles a nuestros dos nuevos miembros del personal de Breakthrough Santa Fe.

Digo “bienvenidos de nuevo” porque para Yesenia “Yesi” Bermejo y Oscar Loya, Breakthrough había sido su hogar durante años antes de comenzar en sus roles profesionales este verano. De hecho, es posible que muchos de ustedes ya los hayan conocido como estudiantes de Breakthrough y como maestros de verano Breakthrough antes de este año.

Sobre su regreso a Breakthrough, Yesi dice: “Me siento extremadamente honrado de ser bienvenido nuevamente a una comunidad tan única y energizante. Breakthrough inició mi alegría de trabajar con jóvenes de Nuevo México y busco continuar mi propio aprendizaje permanente a través del Breakthrough Way.” Yesi se graduó de Santa Fe High School y Breakthrough en 2015 y luego estudió literatura inglesa en la Universidad St. Edward’s en Austin, TX, como becaria de Davis New Mexico. Yesi aporta cinco años de experiencia como maestra de verano para Breakthrough Santa Fe y más recientemente fue coordinadora de sitio de Communities in Schools en Nina Otero Community School. Estoy encantado de tener dos miembros del equipo que encarnan tan profundamente el espíritu innovador del aprendizaje permanente y que se preocupan tanto por involucrar a familias enteras para garantizar el éxito de los estudiantes. Lo más importante es que aportan una perspectiva crítica de Santa Fe al centro de nuestro trabajo, compartiendo un contexto poderoso que conducirá a mejores resultados para nuestros estudiantes.

Comenzamos el comienzo de este año en una posición más fuerte que nunca. Somos administradores de una donación impactante que nos permitirá hacer que la universidad sea más asequible para nuestros estudiantes: nuestros estudiantes de 9° grado comenzarán su viaje a la escuela secundaria con 529 College Savings Plans y nuestros estudiantes de 12° grado se graduarán con la Beca Breakthrough para estudiantes estatales. Dimos la bienvenida a nuestro programa a 36 nuevos estudiantes de séptimo grado y completamos otro verano exitoso, dando la bienvenida a maestros jóvenes de regiones remotas de los Estados Unidos e incluso aquí en nuestro propio patio trasero.
