Events and Activities

While the Breakthrough program fosters academic excellence and provides support to students seeking a path to college, it also serves to provide a well-rounded experience for its students.  In addition to courses in math, science and English, students participate in a wide range of activities during the summer program.

Career Day

To help students identify areas of interest that can translate to career options, Breakthrough Santa Fe hosts a “Career Day” each summer.  Students visit with working professionals and learn about careers as artists, veterinarians, accountants, musicians, etc.

Visitor’s Day

Although visitors are always welcome at Breakthrough Santa Fe, Visitor’s Day is a special day for members of the Breakthrough community to gather.  From donors to family members to educators and beyond, Visitor’s Day is an opportunity to find out more about Breakthrough, and to connect to the vibrant experience Breakthrough students have every day of the summer program.

Field Trips

Art Walk

Seventh grade students take a walk down Canyon Road and visit art galleries.  While looking at sculpture, pottery and contemporary and classical paintings, students also look for items as part of a scavenger hunt, tryingto find every item they have on their list.

Bandelier Camping Trip

Seventh and eighth grade students travel to Bandelier and spend the night cooking, hiking and camping.

As part of our Career Day, students visit the offices of various professionals in the community.  Past visits have included the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, the New Mexican, restaurants, and the offices of doctors and lawyers in Santa Fe.

Friday Events

Spirit Day

On the first Friday of the summer program, students recite cheers they have written, perform skits, and wear colors from their various teams (red, blue, green and yellow) to show their Breakthrough spirit.

Olympics

Breakthrough Olympics is both an athletic and an academic event.  Each team competes to do the best it can, from solving mathematical puzzles to working as a team to maneuver through a simulated ropes course.

Celebration

Alexis
After six weeks of hard work, all of the Breakthrough students and families gather on a Saturday (past classes and present) to celebrate the close of the program.  At Celebration, students display work they have done in their classes during the program, and parents, teachers and other members of the Breakthrough community get a chance to unwind and meet in a relaxed atmosphere.  This is a big event and the culmination of all our hard work.
